Teachers

Daniel

Daniel is a bassist and musician based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has 14 years of experience performing, arranging, and teaching music and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in Composition-Improvisation and Double Bass. He has played in a variety of cover and tribute bands that have performed at festivals, theaters, and corporate events. He has also played as a session musician for Eroll Starr, Cecile Monique, Sierra Pilot, Vera Casa Opera, and was a co-founder of the independent band 12 Mile Island. He has also worked with Valerie Shearman and Knox Presbyterian Church as their musical director.

Devan

devanDevan began taking bass lessons at WIMA when he was 14 years old. Green Day, Rush, and Muse were among the bands he studied for the next three years. Devan was accepted into Vanier College for Jazz Performance on Electric Bass after graduating from high school. He was awarded the scholarship for the best Bass audition the next year. 

Devan is a member of many of his own creative bands. He currently plays bass with The Record Breakers, Lost Lighthouse, and The Chris George Project, all of which are based in Montreal. The Record Breakers have published two albums and performed across Eastern Canada, most notably opening for Bon Jovi at The Bell Centre. Lost Lighthouse has a one EP out and has been playing performances all across Montreal for the past two years. The Chris George Project has recorded one CD, which will be published soon, and has performed at numerous venues in Montreal. 

Devan’s diversified musical career has taught him how to play a variety of musical styles, including rock, blues, country, pop, funk, and jazz. His ambition is to be able to share his love of music with others so that they can benefit from all that music has to offer.

Eric

devanEric is a versatile musician who has been immersed in music since childhood. With three years of jazz studies at Vanier College’s professional music program and current studies in Jazz Performance at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, he has built a strong foundation in rhythm, harmony, and improvisation.

As a bass teacher, Eric focuses on helping students understand groove, timing, and the role of the bass in different musical settings. Drawing on his experience performing at private and public events across Montreal and the West Island, he teaches students how to lock in with the rhythm section while also exploring creative expression. Eric works with students of all ages, from beginners learning their first bass lines to advanced players developing their own style.

Hayden

Hayden was born with a passion for music, and early on, he began experimenting with various instruments, including the bass, before ultimately gravitating toward the guitar. He dedicated seven years at WIMA, learning from a range of music teachers, and then pursued his education in Jazz Performance at Vanier College.

In addition to being a talented singer and composer, Hayden is the lead singer of The Record Breakers, a Montreal-based country/pop rock band. They’ve released two albums and had the exciting opportunity to perform at the Bell Centre as the opening act for Bon Jovi.

Proficient in rock, country, blues, folk, and pop, Hayden embraces a laid-back teaching style that allows students to feel at ease while playing the bass. He focuses on making the learning experience enjoyable while building their confidence and knowledge!

Ilya

Ilya’s passion for music ignited at a young age, thanks to his father’s love for classical composers. While he sang in an Orthodox Church choir as a child, his true musical journey began when he picked up the bass and guitar at eight, exploring genres from rock to classical. His deep interest in progressive jazz led him to pursue Jazz Guitar courses at Vanier College and Concordia University.

With extensive experience in film production, Ilya has composed music for several independent films and performed in various progressive rock, funk, and jazz bands at venues across Montreal.

Ilya’s dedication to teaching allows him to share his enthusiasm for the bass with his students. His teaching approach emphasizes clear communication and fostering a supportive learning environment. Students start by developing their foundational bass skills through songs they love, as well as popular tracks. Ilya also enjoys introducing advanced techniques like improvisation and songwriting, helping his students deepen their musical expression.

Kevin

Kevin brings over 20 years of experience as a bassist to his teaching, sharing his passion for rhythm and groove with students of all levels. He discovered his love for bass during his teenage years, performing in school choirs, church services, and various ensembles. His ability to adapt to different musical styles laid the foundation for his diverse career.

In 2012, Kevin earned honors from the Contemporary Music & Technology program at Selkirk College in Nelson, BC, where he expanded his musical expertise into jazz, R&B, funk, and hip-hop. After returning to Hamilton, Ontario, he began teaching bass and performing with blues and top-40 cover bands. Kevin later moved to Montreal to join an original jazz-rock band, touring extensively across Canada.

Kevin’s teaching focuses on building strong fundamentals, developing creative expression, and fostering a deep connection to the bass. His personalized lessons help students unlock their potential while enjoying the art of music-making.

Kyle

Montreal-based musician Kyle is a skilled bassist, songwriter, performer, sound technician, and educator. From shaping the sound of alternative rock bands like Really Good Bad Guy and Feast or Famine to playing in jazz jam sessions, he has honed a well-rounded and adaptable musical style.

Originally from Alberta, Kyle studied at Red Deer College, where he earned a music diploma and cultivated his love for bass guitar, singing, and recording. He later obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Pop (Performance) from MacEwan University in Edmonton (2015), performing with the university’s Big Band. Recently, he has been playing bass with the alt-country/folk-rock band The Goddamsels, which traveled to Seoul Music Week in South Korea in September 2024.

Kyle is also a dedicated educator with a passion for languages. In 2022, he earned a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from McGill University. He currently teaches international students at McGill and offers bass lessons in Montreal.

Wes

Wes is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and educator based in Montreal and currently studying at McGill University. Alongside guitar, he has extensive experience as a bassist, working in band, session, and studio settings across a variety of styles including rock, R&B, and neo-soul.

Wes has toured throughout Canada and the United States and has worked as a session bassist on recording projects in professional studios. As an instructor, he helps students build strong rhythmic foundations, groove, and musical confidence. His approach is supportive and practical, focusing on real-world playing skills and helping students become strong, reliable musicians.
